Douriean Fletcher, the self-taught metalsmith behind the jewelry and adornments in Marvel's Black Panther films, found inspiration early on in her career in ancient Egyptian jewelry, including specific rings held here at the Walters Art Museum. Late last year, in preparation for her forthcoming exhibition at the Walters, @douriean chatted with Greg Bailey, Senior Objects Conservator, and Christine Sciacca, the exhibition's curator, to examine these scarab-shaped rings. 💎 The scarab was a popular motif in ancient Egyptian jewelry, symbolizing regeneration and rebirth 🪲 This sacred beetle was connected to the sun deity Khepri, the god of resurrection, who could appear in the form of a scarab. This amethyst scarab ring swivels and can be rotated to reveal a hieroglyphic inscription on its gold mount, which reads "Butler of Nefer-her: Hebi," identifying the piece as the property of a royal servant. When she crafted jewelry for Marvel Studios' Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, Douriean Fletcher referenced Mayan artifacts like this flute from the Walters Art Museum. This Mayan wind instrument depicts a seated man dressed in noble attire. His right cheek displays the image of the "jester god," an emblem of royalty that invokes the power of agricultural fertility and world renewal. The sprouting maize plant in the center of his brow references the traditional crown of the maize god and of Mayan kings. The figure's facial patterns are echoed in the adornments @douriean created for the Talokanil, the water people portrayed in the film. The figurine also wears a large shell necklace, connecting it to the sea, and by extension, to the Talokanil characters. Douriean Fletcher hand-selected this Ethiopian processional cross from the Walters Art Museum's collection to appear in Douriean Fletcher: Jewlery of the Afrofuture. Artifacts like this inspired the necklace she created for Paramount Pictures' Coming 2 America (2021). Here, the artist discusses the craftsmanship of this piece with Christine Sciacca, Curator of European Art, 300–1400 CE and point curator for her exhibition at the Walters. In orthodox ceremonies around the world, priests carry processional crosses on poles at the conclusion of church services and in elaborate parades through the streets on holy days. This processional cross is constructed of a pattern of interlocking circles. Three larger crosses spring forth at the top and sides of the cross, defining the cruciform shape of the entire object. The complicated interlace design echoes the patterns found in Ethiopian Orthodox manuscripts at the end of the 15th century. n preparation for her exhibition, Douriean Fletcher: Jewelry of the Afrofuture, @douriean visited the Walters to select pieces from the museum's collection to appear side by side with her own works of art in the exhibtion. Why? This type of ornate Egyptian artifact directly inspired the jewelry she made for Coming 2 America (2021). #didyouknow? The Egyptians used a variety of special objects to perform rituals for the gods. This special collar, called an "usekh," would have been used as an ornament on the bow of a sacred ship, invoking the gods to guarantee protection.
